A Note from Pastor Ryan
On Sunday, Pastor John talked about how Abraham was called to be a blessing to the world. We too can be a blessing to others, BUT actually being a blessing means that we don’t keep a score, we don’t begrudge being a blessing. When we are actually a blessing towards others, it blesses us as well. In order for us to move towards that, we must be aware of our desire for security. This is a good desire, but like all good desires, it can be used against us. We have to be aware of where we derive our security. In their course workbook, Gravity Commons shows us that: We fall for the temptation of Security when we trust those things to give us the security
we are seeking, rather than trusting God, and every word that comes from his mouth, to
give us what we need. In order for us to help discern if we are falling for the temptation of security, here are a few prompts to guide personal reflection seeing if the temptation for earthly security is at play.
• When we can’t seem to throw anything out “just in case we need it,” Security might be at work.
• When we only buy the cheapest versions of the goods and services we need, Security might be at work.
• When we feel sick to our stomachs when we need to use our savings account to pay for a car repair, Security might be at work.
• When we can’t refuse free samples, Security might be at work.
• When we can’t imagine offering our house for our small group to meet in because
we’re afraid we might not have the energy for it, Security might be at work.• When we must “stock up” and always have a “surplus” on hand because we
refuse to run out of something, Security might be at work. (These are all from the Formation course notebook
In each of these situations, Security also might not be at work. The key for us is to discern what is motivating our actions? Don’t forget what pastor Ryan said in his sermon two Sundays ago. One of the main disconnects in our discipleship is we often don’t do a great job of giving God our desires. Sometimes we even expect God to conform to our desires. We really should be conforming our desires to God! Examining our desires helps us to surrender even them to God. A few more things to help us turn our desires towards God. The core idol of security is thinking we cannot be happy unless we KNOW we are safe and secure. The question of this temptation is “Will I have enough?”
The Lie is “I have something to lose” (we end up hoarding and seeking to protect our stuff because we think we have something to lose… as if we could store up treasures on earth.
The fake identity of security is “I am what I have.” We know this isn’t true, but the temptation to seek this out is always present. We should take some time regularly to let our desire for security come from God. When are secure in Jesus, then we don’t have to fear not having enough, we can live in freedom and the Lord can make us a blessing to others.
