A Note from Pastor Ryan

I recently heard someone say, “Disillusionment is a superpower.” It struck me as odd because we usually use that word negatively. However, he pointed out that when we are disillusioned, we are willing to see the truth and not wooed by illusions- things which seem to be true but are not.

I heard this not long after reading 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28. (From today’s Book of Common Prayer reading) This passage is a favorite among Nazarenes because we get our theology of sanctification from it.

It has incredibly encouraging and instructive words like: “be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

On first reading the instructions here may seem like a high challenge. Often when I speak about holiness, folks act like it is a great burden.

Might I suggest that the reason holiness and sanctification can seem difficult is because we are not yet disillusioned?  That is to say we forget that the world in its present form is passing away.  We forget that we are to wake up, O sleeper and rise from the dead.”

Those of us who are in Christ- New creation has come!

The illusions of this world teach us to be impatient, to repay wrong for wrong, to strive to do what is good for me, to complain always, rarely pray, be ungrateful in all circumstances.

We live this way because we have bought the illusion that acting this way is somehow good for us or for others. But it is not.

I pray that we become disillusioned with this world so we can properly envision the kingdom of God. When we do, then living for Jesus- saying “I have been crucified with Christ and it is not I who live, but Christ who lives in me,” becomes easy.  Then we can trust that the One who is faithful will actually sanctify us entirely.
