A Note from Pastor Ryan

My friend Jason Byasse wrote "The Psalms are a rich feast" in the introduction to his commentary on Psalms 101-150. In my mind a rich feast includes a variety of foods so there is something for everyone- though not everyone will enjoy every dish.

Perhaps you've discovered that a meaningful psalm to someone else doesn't carry the same weight to you. This Eastertide we'll be going through the Psalms on Sunday mornings. But I would also encourage you, if you don't already have a reading plan, to read a psalm daily. This practice can help us see God and ourselves more clearly.

Of course, eating a feast is different than eating fast food. If you're like me, you rarely savor fast food. A feast is meant to be slow and savored. We miss things if we rush.

One of today's Psalms from the daily office is Psalm 115. A rushed reading could lead us to miss some of the theological flavor.  It says, "Those who make [idols] will be like them, and so will all who trust in them."  The psalmist links worship with identity. In this passage he is pointing out that the idols which draw people away from God are lifeless. That's what all idols do. They take us away from the source of life, God.  This then causes me to question, "Are there things which I have made into an idol which are making me like them?"  Clearly I do not want that, I hope you want to avoid that too.

This easter season let us savor the Psalms and let us cling to the God who is living not dead like the idols of this world.
