A Note from Pastor Ryan

This past Sunday we had the joy of celebrating Trinity Sunday with a baptism. like Christians have for centuries, we baptized Asher in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

While Pastor John was preaching in the sanctuary, I got the joy of teaching Children's church where we learned about the Trinity. I took the opportunity to make them "smarter than the adults." by telling them what the Trinity is NOT.

We talked about the Trinity is not like water- solid, liquid, or gas. Because God does not phase shift. God does not exist in different modes. God is always Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In Jesus baptism we see Jesus, the Holy Spirit Descend like a dove, and the Father speak. All three are present. Jesus is not merely another mode of God.

I also showed the problems with comparing God to a three leaf clover. We all colored and cut out the clovers and then I took mine and cut off a leaf. I asked if I still had a three leaf clover- NO! That's a two leaf clover. You cannot cut off the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit. God is three in one. We don't fully understand how that can be, but if we could fully understand God, God wouldn't be very big. God's ways are beyond ours, and as much as some don't like it. It is simply true. We are not God. God is God.

Eventually we moved away from negative teaching (this is a method called apophatic- there's your expensive word). I told them one of the important things for us to know about God as Trinity is that The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were there at the beginning creating everything. They did not need to create anything, but they chose to create. God chose to create you and me. God wasn't lonely. God exists in perfect communion. God created us in God's image to be in communion with God, each other, and the rest of creation.

I wanted the children to know that they matter to God. That they can have a deep relationship with God, and that they have a church who is rooting for them. I hope that each of us adults know that already.

I thought I would end this by giving you a song- i started listening to it a few months ago. Perhaps you'll enjoy it as I do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrzqLIJDVQU

God Bless,

Pastor Ryan
