Pastor's Note

If you are keeping up with the read the Bible in a year plan, then today's readings include Exodus 7-9. These passages tell of the 10 plagues brought by God through Moses to free the Israelites from Egyptian captivity. While the frogs, flies etc get the press, there is something which regularly happens with each plague.

Pharaoh's heart gets hardened.

He becomes brittle and eventually, like all things brittle, he will be broken. While Pharoah is clearly an enemy of God in the scriptures, we should recognize that we too could have our hearts hardened. In fact, on more than one occasion we are instructed to guard our hearts.

Often when we hear "Guard your hearts" we hear that as a way of putting up walls. But that is exactly what Pharoah did. In fact the New Testament teaches the opposite.  Guarding our hearts is not about erecting walls or fences, but rather doing our best to prevent our hearts from hardening. The Christian way of guarding our hearts is to let the potter mold us. We must behold the incredible love of Jesus, repent of our self preservation and instead be people who love. Love requires us to be vulnerable. So guarding our hearts is against hardness.

As 2026 goes on let us reject callousness and hardness of hearts, let us guard our hearts by being people who love and respect all.

God Bless,

Pastor Ryan
